LOCAL BODIES.

MANUREWA TOWN BOARD. The following members were present at the meeting of the Town Board :—Messrs.. A. C. A. Sexton (chairman), McCallum, Gallaher, Cox, Fawcett, Whyte. Butterworth and the clerk (Mr. H. Kay). Metal Supply.—Letters were received from the gaol and the Otorohanga Gravel Co. stating that a certificate would be necessary for future consignments, setting out that the metal was not for roads competing with the railway. It was resolved that the traffic manager be asked for a definition of a road competing with the railway ; that the quarry manager be asked to consign as usual, and a. rebate to be claimed at a later date. South Seas Exhibition.—The committee wrote asking for a donation of £ 10. This sum was granted, with a proviso that donations are validated. Half-way House.—A letter was received from Mr. A. Jackson, Wlri, asking the board to be represented at a meeting to protest against the erection of this institution. The letter was received. Great South Koad.—A reply was received from the Main Highways Board approving of a G-inoh scoria base with 6 inches of 2J-tnch metal and 3 inches of lj-inch metal, but stating that a width of 18 feet only would be subsidised. It was decided to defer discussion on this matter till th* next meeting. Public Hall.—lt was decided that the Hall Committee be instructed to bring down a report on proposed improvements to the hall. Notice of motion was given by the chairman that the resolution passed at a meeting held on October .13, 1924; appointing the Public Trustee sole commissioner for sinking funds in respect of certain loans, be rescinded. Petitions in reference to the reconstruction of the Great South Road and alsodealing with the retention 06 the services of the present engineer were presented and received. OTAHUHU BOROUGH COUNCIL. The fortnight meeting of the Otahuhu Borough Council took place last- evening the Deputy-Mayor (Mr. T. Clements) presiding, with "the following councillors present : —Messrs. E. Civil, J. JJ. Whvte, C R Petrie, C. Arlington, 11. J. Hall, T. Whiteley, and ,T. Paine. Gas Mnin.—A letter was received from the Auckland Gas Co. intimating that, under provisions of Act 1871, it was intended to break the footpath in Great South Road from the gas holder to Portage Road for the purpose of laying a gas main. This was described by one councillor as a "policy of irritation." ! Donation to Exhibition.—The Department of Industries and Commerce wrote re a donation to tho Auckland Provincial display at the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition. Referred to the Legal and | Finance Committee. Telegraph Cable.—ln reply to the council's complaint re the breaking of the footpath jiu Station Road for the purpose of laying a cable after the path had been reformed^ ' the Department stated that an assnrnncc was given (hat no such work was contemplated, but owing to an aerial cable becoming faulty, it was found necessary to do the work complained of. Tree Planting.—Cr. Whiteley reported that owing to English limes and beeches not bPing grown locally, orders had to be sent South, but if the trees were not to hand soon, they would be too late for this year. Drainage Scheme.—The officer in charge of the Railway Department wrote statin" that he regretted inability to attend the tentative arrangements in connection with a conference re the drainage of the workers' dwellings in Nikau Street. It was resolved that the Water and Drainage Committee confer with the Railway Department to discuss the borough engineer's plan for tiie work, which it ia considered will be acceptable to both parties. Street Improvements. —The road foreman reported that he had commenced work on Queen Street and the cost to date had been £20 16/2. The work in connection with the footpaths in Luke Street had cost £80 0/4, the path being cut out from Hutton Street to Albert Street.
