> ■ Mr. J. O'Connell, of Courtney Place post office, Wellington, has been appointed postmaster at Carterton. Mr. E. T. R. Johnson, Comptroller of Savings Banks, retires on superannuation at the end of this month after 40 years spent in the Government service. Mr. Louis Nathan, of the firm of L. D. Nathan, Ltd., who has been on a visit to London, arrived by the express this morning from Wellington. 3lr. Thomas Lamont, Mayor of Devonport, has received telegrams from the Leader of the Liberal party, Mr. George Forbes, and also from Mr. R. Masters, wishing him every success in his candidature for the Waitemata seat. Captain 11. C. J. A. K. West, of the Royal Navy, arrived by the Ruahine on j a visit to the Dominion. Captain West formerly served on the New Zealand Station. I Mr. and Mrs. IT. E. ITvde of Marl- j borough. Mr. and Mrs. E." Criffiths. nnd I Miss Griffiths of New Plymouth. Dr. T. I McKibbin and Mr. L. Ducliapccir of Wellington, are staying at the Star Hotel. I Mr. Leo Dv Chateau arrived this ; morning to make the necessary arrange- I ments for the series of concerts to be ' given by Mr. Paul Althouse, tenor, and ' Arthur Mkldletoit, baritone, under the j J. and X. Tait management. { General Sir Charles Mansfield Clarke, j G.C.8.. 0.C.V.0.. who is a passencer for I New Zealand by the Corinth ir. due ' shortly, serve.) as an cnsii'ii wiih the o7th regiment in New Zealand during the war with the Maoris from IS6I to 1866. Sir Charles is now in his 86th year and wishes to revisit the scenes of hia service iv New Zealand.
