BRITISH MOTOR TRADE.

EFFECT OF NEW DUTIES. The office of H.M. Trade Commissioner has received advice from home regarding the effect of the reimposition of the British import duties upon motor-cars, amounting to 33 1-3 per cent, which are removed a year ago. The result, he is informed, has been a general feeling of bouyaney and confidence in the trade. Continental manufacturers do not disguise their alarm, with one important exception, in which case the manuiactuier has stated that the principal object of import duties is to raise home prices, and in those circumstances he hopes •-&till ■: to - find* -an -entry into the United Kingdom market. So far from thia being the case, several British manufacturers have already announced reductions in their home prices, in anticipation of the duties, while arrangements for extended production are being made which will probably cause another general cut in prices on next season's models. The effect of this increased production J says the Commissioner, will undoubtedly Ibe a reduction in the price of British, models in New Zealand, and a justifica- ! tion of the principle of protection which may lead to a logical extension.
