ITREE PLANTING CAMPAIGN.

■ ■ CITS' COUNCIL BUST. IN STREETS AND DOMAIN. — A great deal of commendable treeplanting is now being undertaken by the Auckland City Council. People who have been puzzled to know why the beautiful native trees have been co ignored in the past will be pleased to know that i several hundred, including puriri, rewa- • • rewa. pohutukawa. maire, mapau, ; tawhiwhi, rimu. and taraire* have been ; planted in the Domain at the top of the path that leads from Stanley Street to I the tea kiosk. The trees have been planted in the strip of grotukl that lies between the footpath and the pretty little'creek that runs through the "jungle." It is to be hoped still more , native trees will be planted in suitable . places. A good many trees .ire being planted ■ in various streets in the city, and when they grow up Auckland should have several avenues of considerable beauty. I ln the ease of streets it ie usual to use deciduous trees, owing to the fact that evergreens .keep the roadways damp in winter, as the sun cannot get through. One of the streets now being planted by Council workmen is Shelly' Beach Road, aud in this case a resident questions the wisdom of a custom which in suitable streets is very much to be commended. Shelly Beach Road, however, is . in a very different category. It is the main approach to that popular spot Point Erin Park. On holidays the footpaths in this street are crowded with people' going to and coming from the park, and then they are quite narrow enough; in fact, pedestrians often have to invade the roadway. Beautiful as . an aveuue of well-grown trees may be, , the convenience of the people that use , *Jie footpath is more important". , Another reason why this street should not be planted, according to this resident, is that the trees have been put in practically over the underground cables , of the Telegraph Department, which go down this street to the waterfront and cross the harbour to the northern suburbs over the Waitemata. These cables are laid about 3ft from the kerb, in some cases less than that, so it is , easy to foresee what will happen when j the roots of the trees begin to spread.j, WTien that cable comes to be resurrected there will not be much left of the Council's avenue.
