The Child Welfare Bill lias been considered by the Educatipn Committee of the House of Representatives, which has made a number of amendments. A new clause provides that the initial cost of institutions to carry out the purpose of the bill shall be met from the education loan fund. The committee has also adopted a clause that when the birth of an illegitimate child is notified by the registrar to the child welfare officer, he shall inquire into the condition of the child and mother. If he reports that the child requires official care he will report to the superintendent, who will take action accordingly. Agreements for the maintenance of children may be enforced in the Mine way as orders under the Destitute PersOns Act. Power to make regulations under the Child Welfare Act is extended to include the employment of children in street trading and places of public entertainment.
