NEWMARKET. |_ The meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council was held last night, when there were present the Mayor, Mr. S. Donaldson, and Councillors T. J. Watts. F. J. O'ileara, C. R. Wilson, ,T. tlardley, T. N. Sampson, A. Kent, N. Kelleway, and G. E. Smerdon. The Legal and Finance Committee reported that the balance of the street loan of £15,000 had been raised in. debentures on favourable terms. A scheme for the systematic utilisation of the council's unauthorised expenditure allowance was also submitted and adopted. A letter containing a request that the council forward a letter and sketch indicating the suggested improvements to the approach of the Newmarket Station was received from the district engineer, Kew Zealand Railways. The Mayor stated that the sketch had been forwarded by the engineer, and the letter was received. The Superintendent of Police wrote that the Department was prepared to undertake the control of traffic at the corner of Khyber Pass and Broadway, and Bemuera Road and Broadway, during the hours specified by the council, for the sum ot £200 per annum. The Legal and Finance Committee recommended that the Department be offered £250 per annum. It was decided to adopt the recommendation. The engineer reported that the concrete paving in Park Road may be opened for traffic about August 27. The Mayor was appointed representative of the council on the. Seddon Technical College Board of Managers. BIRKENHEAD, The ordinary meeting of the Birkenhead Borough Council was held last evening. The Mayor. Mr. E. G. Skeates. presided, and Councillors Albert Hadfield, G. B. Hewson. Phil. H. Hayward, M..R. Souster. W. H. Payne, L. K. L. Moller and Hector Clark were also present. Band Instruments. —It was agreed to advance £340 to the Birkenhead Band to pay off- the balance owing on the instruments purchased some months ago. Birkdale Corners.—lt was decided to acquire corner sections at Birkdale for tha purpose of minimising the risk of accidents from Increasing traffic. Seddon Technical College.—Mr. H. Clark was appointed to represent Birkenhead at the election of two members of the Board of Managers of the Seddon Memorial Technical College. Water.—The waterworks engineer. Mr. W. Williams. intimated that 1,755.000 gallons of water had been used during the month. The level of Lake Takapuna. was 4 feet 5 inches above sea level, the same as a month ago. Fire Brigade.—The question of a joint fire brigade was referred to a conference frith the Northcote Council. Speeding Nuisance. — Speeding by cyclists on Puriri Road was reported by the Beach Haven Advancement Association. The matter was referred to the police. New Buildings.—The town clerk stated that so far this year the building permits had amounted to 53 and the' value to £17.012. Power Poles.—The reply from the Waitemata Power Board concerning the class of poles to be erected in the borough was accepted as satisfactory. New Footpath.—The foreman of works, Mr. Geo. Giles, reported that the*footpath from the lower end of the sbort-cut to the water trough had been constructed, and the kerbing and channelling completed. ONE TREE HILL ROAD BOARD. At last evening's meeting of the One Tree Hill Road Board Mr. R. G. Clark presided, and there were also present: Messrs. Wilson, Purchas, Rowe. Mclntosh. and Chapman. The manager of the Auckland City Tramways wrote regarding the Board's suggestion that the time recorder at the foot of Farmer's Hill be moved to a point near Green Lane Road, stating that plans were being considered for the alteration of the position, and in due course the recorder mentioned would: be placed near the position desired. Information was received from, the Public Trust Office, Wellington, in referenece te the loan, of £17,000 for the drainage of the western area. Seventeen debentures of £1000 each, together with relative coupons, were forwarded, with the request that they be signed and sealed. The hon. treasurer of the Auckland , Provincial War Memorial Fund acknowledged receipt of the Board's first instalment of £50 to the fund. The engineer reported that the -work of repairing the Great South Road, between, the Harp of Erin and Green Park Road, was practically completed. The building permits issued during July numbered 26. they representing a total value of £10,060.
