NORTHERN UNION CUP. AUCKLAND SECURES TROPHY. SOUTH AUCKLAND BEATEN. The League match for the Northern Union Cup, a trophy held-by .South Auckland since 1U22. was played at Carlaw Turk yesterday afternoon. and attracted a fair attendance. Auckland wore the challengers, and though in the early stages of the play the visitors were the equal of the local team, the second ! half was always in favour of Auckland, and the latter won by 21 points to IC. The teams : — ! Auckland.—Herewini. Littlewood, Gar- ' diner, B. Oavidson, Cole, Greening, Poison, ; Kinge, Townsend, O'Brien, McDonald, I ! Payne, Douglas. South Auckland.—Johnston, Jackways, Hemmingway, Finlay, S. Raynor, Pakl, G. Kaynor, Stevenson, Hutt, Geison, Menzies, Dufty, Wilson. The visitors were unlucky in not scoring ! in the first five minutes, when Hemming- J way and Paki beat'Herewini and kicked I across the Auckland line, bat the kick ' was just a trifle hard, and the ball went "dead.' r Jackways then intercepted and ' some bright reverse passing between he, ' Wilson and Finlay saw the latter score. ' Dufty failedgwlth the shot. A cross-kick ] by Finlay was gathered in by Gardiner, who made a good run down the line, being downed by the full-back, Johnston. Poison J was feeding the Auckland backs in great style, and they opened their account when Cole made a fine opening before throwing a long pass to Littlewood on the wing. ] The lastnamed pulled away from two oppo- < ncnts to score in the corner. Gardiner I made a fine though unsuccessful attempt to convert. Score, 3 all. Littlewood t scored another fine try when he received the ball from Davidson, and went down the Eideline to beat three of the opposition and score. Auckland 6, South Auckland 3. The visitors attacked and Herewini appeared to miss the ball, allowing Dufty and Wilson to take it across, for Dufty ; to touch down. However the referee ruled a force. A moment later Jackways had ai ] clear run in, but was called back. The j j Hamilton men were playing with a lot of | dash and opening the game up in fine style. O'Brien, Townaend and Payne took play to the visitors' twenty-five, where Dufty offside saw Gardiner again try a i shot at goal. Twice Finlay was streaking for the Auckland line when Cole came j across and tackled the visiting wing, and j j again Wilson looked like bringing off a' , score, but had the bad luck to knock on. ( Wilson started a movement which ended in Pakl scoring alongside the posts. Dnfty missed the easiest of shots. Score, 6 all. South Auckland were playing by far the better football, and were hammering away near the locals' line, when Townsend got offside, and Finlay landed a goal, putting i c the visitors two points in the lead. The ' advantage was short-lived, as just on j interval Greening set the backs going, the ball being handled in turn by Cole. Gardiner. Davidson and Gardiner again, the lastnamed scoring between the posts, and converting his own try. Auckland 11, South Auckland 8. Early in the second half Jaekways dropped the ball for Davidson to pick up and J run along to score under the bar. < Poison goaled, and Auckland led, I J 16 to 8. Davidson added another try' 1 when he broke away and fooled Johnston. Poison goalr-d. The locals were doing most •> of the attacking, but occasionally the visitors had a turn.
