NEW ZEALAND FIRST.

'.WORLD'S BUTTER RANGIWAHIA THE WINNER. QUEENSLAND A CLOSE SECOND. A New Zealand company was the winner of the World Butter Championship at the Auckland Winter Exhibition, the victory going to Rangiwahia, in the Wellington province. Rangiwahia soared 96J points in the championship, beating the Oakley Dairy Company, of Queensland, which came second, by half "a point. The third place was gained .by .~tn'e;_Go]den*Jßay Dairy Company, of Tiikaka, Nelson, with 95* points. Other New Zealand companies were prominent among the first ten on the list. There were 86 entries for tho, championship, and the judges report that the quality of the butter from the various countries represented differed widely; and there was also a noticeable lack of uniformity in exhibits from tho same countries. Half of tho entries were from companies outside New Zealand. Before tho judging all the entries were placed in cool store for a period, and the condition of some, which were from ■countries not accustomed to making butter for long storage, suffered more than others. The winning butter, was of very high quality, and all the leading entries showed a high order of merit; but the body and texture of a number of exhibits further down the list were rather below a world's championship standard, showing occasional streakiness of colour. Mr. P. J. Carrol, Commonwealth controller of dairy exports, in giving his opinion, stated that from the very inception he realised that a world's butter competition would bo of immense value to Australian manufacturers and would tend to harmonise conditions of manufacture in the two Dominions. Help to Fight Competitors. "Competitions of this nature," he commented, "more especially between countries whoso ultimate aims are identical, cannot fail to have a beneficial influence in both countries, and ehould fortify us in the fight against our real competitor on the London market. "Tho number of entries in this cla»a was very satisfactory, although I should have liked to see a greater variety of Danish and Canadian exhibits, and some from Argentine and Siberia. "Tn, view of the severity of the test, the quality, with few exceptions, was very satisfactory, and when one finds a large percentage of butters after a four months' storage grading Well up in tho first grade, or 'choicest,' as we call it in Australia, it indicates that tho manufacture of these butters hae readied a high standard indeed. Tho maintenance of such a' high degree of quality for extended poriods suroly augurs well for tho , future of New Zealand and Australian butters ou the London market, and will, I hope, bring us nearer to the goal we are aiming at, viz., the time when New Zealand and Australian butters will take their place sido by side with our present competitors, with tho additional advantage that it is grown within tho Empire and produced from the sun-kissed pastures of Now Zealand and Australia. "Amongst the exhibits from abroad the Irish butter showed to best advantage. There is evidence, however, in all the countries competing of a keen desire to make a product suitable for the London market. It therefore behoves us of the Southern Hemisphere to leave no stone unturned not only to maintain our standard," but to keep on improving." In the judging, which was carried out by three members of the Government Dairy Section, representing tho Canterbury, Wellington, and Auckland provinces, points were awarded on the following basis: Flavour 1 50, body 25, colour 20, and finish 5. Every exhibit was awarded a maximum for finish, and it was in flavour that the prize-winners were heavy scorers. Following are the details of the points awarded:— «
