CAREERS OF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS. a ON THE ADMIRAL'S STAFF. Eear-Admiral L. A. Bostwick, Chief-of-Statf, U.S. Battle Fleet, was born on February 21, 1809, at Providence, 8.1. In command U.S.s. South Dakota ana U.S.s. New Mexico during the Great War. Commanded U.S.s. California, August 1922 to June 1923. Commissined RearAdmiral, June 1923. Chief-of-Staff U.S. Battle Fleet, June 1923 to date. Captain Hasbrouck, Commanding Officer U.S.s. California, embarked upon his naval career in ISBB when he was appointed a Naval Cadet from Idaho. After four years at the Naval Academy and two years on the Charleston he was commissioned as an Assistant Engineer. Thereafter he received a special course in marine engineering in French, attended Government schools at Paris, served in the bureau of steam engineering, and on the Maine, Puritan and Yankton. In

1899 he was commissioned a Lieutenant (jg) in the line of the navy. He served on the Monocacy during the Boxer Rebellion and then on the Solace. Wabash, Helena and Arayat. He went round the world in the Kearsage, was gunnery officer of the Michigan, and executive of the Idaho and Florida. His first command was the Yorktown. During the World War Captain Hasbrouck commanded the Covington, which was torpedoed. He commanded the Minnesota from 1919 to 1921, was appointed Naval Attache at Rome in 1921 and in July, 1924, joined U.S.s. California.

Commander Davis, Executive Officer, U.S.s. California, was appointed a midshipman in 1899 from California His two-year cruise as a Past Midshipman was spent on the" Marlblehead. He then, after final graduation from Annapolis, served on the Paul Jones and the Perry. From 1908 to 1910 he commanded the Fox, Rowan and Paul Jones. In 1912 he was in command of the Cleveland and during the Nicaraguan Campaign he was her navigator.
