WALKING IN THE WET.

After the glorious promise of yesterday's bright arrival, the rain of to-day occasioned a dampening of spirits; both on the part of the men of the fleet who had glimpsed Auckland in the sunshine, and of the hospitable Aucklander, glad to welcome the stranger to his shores, and proud to be able to boast of our climate. A dull sky and drizzling rain which obscured the green hilltops discounted the usual enchantment of the city, and doubtless discouraged many of our visitors from landing. However, many of the frequent liberty boats from the ships were full, and by three o'clock there were many hundreds of our whitecapped friends passing along the streets. Quite a number were armed with letters of introduction to Auckland, and requests to "he directed to addresses were frequent. Incidentally it was noticed that many men passed into the picture shows. As the "Star" went to press many more men were arriving, and tho indications are that despite the unkind weather there will be a large crowd ashore this evening.
