night the United States Consul, Mr.. Walter F. Boyle, and Mrs. Boyle gave a receptipn to< the officers of the fleet at the Town-.HaIU where there was a numerous and brilliant assemblage, the guests numbering over.a thousand. It was a delightfully hearty and spontaneous affair, and the home-like atmosphere of the gathering was greatly appreciated among the naval men, who expressed the pleasure they felt at being received: aa. they would even in their own home towns. The Consul and Mrs. Boyle received the guests inside the hall, which wae beautifully decorated with greenery, and illuminated with shaded lights, the whole presenting an appearance of ■ real charm. The stage was arranged as a drawing room, and decorated with dusters of flax and tall cabbage trees, giving it a bower-like appearance, while baskets of ferns, hung from the gallery, finished a most attractive scene. The guests of honour arrived shortly before nine o'clock,, when the band of the California,: which had been entertaining those already assembled with lively jazz, gave a trumpet salute and broke into. "The .Admiral's March." As the guests were escorted tip the hall the British National Anthem was played, followed by. the ! lively "Star Spangled Banner.". Among , the guests from the fleet, were; Admirals Kobiaon, Wiley and Rear-Admirale MacDougall and Bostwicky.who .were r du¥ia£v£he evening presented to most of those present by Mr. and Mrs. Boyle, lia'dy ?arr assisting in •the reception-.-. ;Sir' Parr represented : the , Government, Commander Miles the New Zealand Naval Division,' Colonel H.
