POLICE COURT.

(Before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., and Mr. J. H. Fray, J.P.) FALSE PRETENCES. James Sadler (42) for whom Mr. Wyatt appeared, pleaded guilty to a charge of obtaining three razor strops and a stropping machine valued at £1 6/ from W. D. and H. O. Wills, Ltd., by falsely representing that the goods were for R. Martin, of Parnell. Chief Detective Cummings said that the case was not a serious one, all the articles with the exception of 12/ worth having been recovered. Accused had never been before the Court for dishonesty before. In asking that accused should be dealt with leniently, Mr. Wyatt sail that the offence was really only a tech* nical one. The* Bench inflicted a "fine of £2 and ordered accused to make restitution of 12/, and to pay £1 costs. THEFT OF ATTACHE CASE. A charge of stealing an attache cast and contents, valued at £5, the pro* perty of P. W. Halliday, was admitted by Alfred Callaghan (25). The Chief Detective said .that accused took the case from the Tear seat of a motor car in the street. There was no doubt that he was under the influence of liquor at the time. Callaghan was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within three months. On another charge of theft at Wellington, Callaghan was remanded to appear there on August 13. PROBATION FOR THEFT. ■ A young man named Leonard James Monk, who was represented by Sir. Allan Moody, admitted that he stole a carpet valued at £15, the property of George Goffin. i The police stated that accused had been instructed to take the "carpet to an •— auction room to be sold, the reserve price being fixed at £12 12/. However, Monk sold the carpet for £5 17/ and pocketed the money. Mr. Moody said that Monk was a married man with one child, and was only 25 years of age. He had been employed by a firm of carriers who owed him money as wages. He wanted benzine for his motor lorry and foolishly used the proceeds of the carpet to buy benzine. If given a chance he would mak« full restitution. Mr. Poynton in admitting accused to three years' prohabion, and ordering him to repay £12 12/ to Mr. Goffin, warned him that this was his final chance, as he had been before the" Court for theft before.
