With the rapid development of the oilenglned vessel, a new situation has arisen in shipping. It Is pointed out In this month's "Motor Ship" that motor vessels aggregating nearly 1,000,000 tons gross are now being built. In tbe last ■quarter more motoir ships thau steamers were commenced, and during the last 18 months motor ships under construction, have increased .threefold, while steamers have decreased toy nearly 00 per cent. ..A year ago motor ships represented 24 per cent of the steam tonnage on the stocks. To-day they represent 58 per cent. For the first time in history there is a larger motor .than steam tonnage being built in Continental yards, and In countries other than England the percentage of motor to steam tonnage under construction. has increased from 23.5 to 102 within a period of one year. It l 3 significant that Germany, in building up her new mercantile marine, is adopting the ell engine almost exclusively. German steam tonnage under construction is less than 10 .per cent of Britteh, font the motor tonnage Is over 70 per cent. It Is obvious, therefore, that Germany Is attacking the British motor shipbuilding indnstry with all its energy, a laot that should not be Ignored either by shipbuilders or shipowners.
