"SELLING" N.Z. SCENERY.

TO WEALTHY AMERICANS.

U.S.A. CONSUL'S ADVICE.

Speaking to members of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce to-day, the United States Consul, Mr. Walter: Boyle, stressed the value of New Zealand's scenic attractions as the best medium for adjusting the trade balance between the two countries. ■ On this topic he said:— . "Really, I cannot- tell'ypu;;just how many millions of pounds sterling we sell to New Zealand each year, nor how many millions of the same kind of pounds you sell 'to us. But there is one thing I can tell you, and that is that the two sides of the ' ledger -do riot balance, that we sell you. far more than we. buy -from you, that the account is lop-sided,' a condition that you, as business men, know should be corrected.

"We are confident that,.in spite of your Empire-preferential, that our exports to New Zealand will continue to increase, and that in spite of our cus- ; toms tariff,, .that- your sales to-' our country will improve.

"For, notwithstanding, our tariff Wall, as so many are 'wont to call it, we are far from producing all that we need, and annually import both raw materials and manufactured articles that mount up into, billions.

"And so you gentlemen of New Zealand, who have been so kind as to buy from us so much more thari we buy from you, may I ask- you to: set your thinking,.caps., tq. s worjspg ..and see if 'there is not some way in which we can balance our account) though. I must tell you in advance, that being in the way of producing immense quantities of dairy products, foodstuffs, and meats ourselves, that we really cannot ;take much of this from you, and must ask that you offer us something else.

' "If you will permit a suggestion, a suggestion, which, I presume" you have heard thousands of times, I would like to point out to you that your country-has an -inexhaustible supply of a product that you could dispose of in immense blocks to eager Americans. It is your 'scenery, your thermal wonderlands, arid your medical springs.

.:. '"Really, I can ' only .see one reason iwhx.jpu. do not have to employ' hun-' dreds o v f traffic policemen to keep American tourist traffic from blocking your highways, and that is because your.counnbt well enough known in the United States, because it is only the traveller looking for something outside of the beaten track of tourist travel, who to your country.

"It would appear -that judicious, advertising would remedy this condition, and bring to your shores, the doubtful advantage of being in the beaten, track of the average tourist."
