OBITUARY.
DR. A. I. GARLAND. There died suddenly at Auckland yesterday one of the early pioneers of the North Otago district in Dr. A. I. Garland, who, for 37 years, practised his profession at Oamaru. Dr. Garland was born at Banbury, in the County of Oxford, in 1845, and, after studying his profession in Edinburgh and Glasgow, arrived in Wellington in the early seventies. Whilst in practice there, for a few years he was honorary physician to the Marquis of Normanby, then Governor of New Zealand. Later he practised for a short while in Dunedin before settling in Oamaru. - After losing his wife, the daughter of John Hassel, one of the founders of Oamaru, he relinquished practice and spent two years in England. On his return to New Zealand he settled in Hamilton, retiring from there some three years ago to live with his son at Bayswater. He is survived by three sons: Albert Garland, of Hamilton, Harold Garland, of Bayswater, and Hassell Garland, of Auckland, and six grandchildren.
