The ketch Miro went'on the slip yesterday for cleaning nnd painting. The Luuill stcnnier Oinana is to leave Auckland this afternoon for Kaipara to complete discharge of her Newcastle! coal. The new motor ship Monle Olivia completed her trials in April. She is a 14,000 ton vessel, and is owned by the Hamburg-South America Line. The new. British-India steamer Quedn is to leave Calcutta, on July fl for Australian ports. She is taking the place of the Janus. Jhe Queda was only built last year, and Is of 7700 tons gress. Her ports of discharge will he Fromantle, Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney. The old iron sailing vessel Delta, 753 tons register, which was built by C. Hill and Son, of Cardiff, in 18C3 (00 years ago), and is now au auxiliary schooner, has recently been sold to Spanish bnvcis at Barcelona, mid renamed Frcixns 11. FLORA SAILS AGAIN. Having completed her ensine repairs, the luion Company's sacacmer lorn, which broke down off Ciivler Island early this week, sailed again foi- Cook Islands shortly after noon to-day. She will load a cargo of fruit for discharge at this port. KAITANGATA LEFT HOBART. Carrying cargo loaded at Melbourne and Ilohart. the luion Co.'s freighter Knltangata cleared Hobart for Auckland vestcrdaj- morning. She is due at Auckland about, the end of next week. Iv continuation of her voyage from London, the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Tckoa left Auckland for Wellington this morning. On completion of her discharge, this vessel will load at Southern ports for her return trip. She will not now return to Auckland for final loading, but is expected to clear Wellington for London, via Panama, un July 23. ''MOTOR SHIPS LAUNCHED. The motor ship Silveruy was launched in April from Messrs. .1. Thompson's yard, Sunderland, for the Way Steamship Company. The motor ship IVisander was completed by the Caledon Shipbuilding and Engineering Co. (Ltd.), for Messrs. Alfred Holt and Co. il.td.i. In April. The Elnilmiik completed trials on April 28. Built by Hurland and Wolff, she Is owned by Messrs. Andrew Weir and Co., anil is is sister ship to the Forrcsbank. KIA OKA LEAVES TOWNSVILI.E. For Opua to commence Homeward loading, the Shaw, Savlll, and Albion Line steamer Kia Ora left Townsvllle this morning. From opua'she is to proceed to Auckland. Tokomaru Bay. Wellington, and Bluff to fill up, being scheduled to sail Dually from Bluff on July 22 for London. AORANGI FROM SYDNEY. With passengers and cargo, the Union Company's R.M.m.s. Aornngl was expected to leave Sydney lust evening for Auckland and forward ports. She is due here on Monday, and will berth at the Queen's wharf. Meantime the vessel is announced to resume her voyage to Vancouver, via Suva and Honolulu on Tuesday. I'NKIN CO.'S STEAMERS. Movements of vessels under the (lag of the Union Co. are announced as follows :— Wanaka arrived at Auckland this morning from Southern ports and berthed at the Prince's wharf. She is expected to sail on Monday for the South. Kalmanawa is timed to sail at 5 p.m. to-day for Portland. Waitnmo is now announced to leave Auckland on Monday next for Geelong. Kalwnrra undoeked this morning and berthed at the King's wharf. She is expected to sail to-morrow for Lautokn. Wingatul has been further delayed by rain at Lyttelton and is not expected to leave there before Monday next for Auckland, via ports. Koromiko is not expected to leave Diinedin for Auckland, via ports, before Monday next. Poolta is due to arrive at Napier this afternoon from Newcastle. She is expected to leave there. early next week for Tauranga and New Plymouth. Florn was expected to sail to-day for Cook Islands. ■ BINTANG CONVERTED TO MOTOR SHIP. The largest steamer in Europe to be converted to mi old-englned ship, and at present the highest-powered single-screw motor vessel afloat, the Bintang. completed satisfactory trials in April, when a speed of 14 Knots was attained. The vessel is owned by the Nethcrlnnd Steamship Company, anil is to be engaged on the Dutch East Indian trade. She is 417 ft Sin In length, with a beam of 54ft Oin, has a deadweight capacity of 9700 tons, and wns originally equipped with a 3000 i.h.p. triple-expan-sion engine running at S3 r.p.m., nnd giving a .speed of 12 knots. The motor now fitted Is a 3000 li.h.p. to 3SOO b.h.p. six-cylinder Snlzer plant running at 90 r.p.m.. and driving a pistoil-type scavenging blower direct off I he crankshaft. The daily fuel consumption ns a steamer was about 5,8 tons, and ns a motor ship it is estimated that it will he 14.7 tons. The auxiliary plant in service at sea will he electrically operated, the power being supplied from ■two Sulzer 80 h.p. Diesel engines driving dynamos. The auxiliary air compressor Is, however, direct coupled to a Diesel engine of 100 b.h.p. The steering gear has been converted to electrical operation. The hunker capacity is 2000 tons, which is sufficient for a round voyage. VOYAGE OF THE lONIC. . From London and Southampton, the White Star liner lonic arrived at Wellington on Tuesday evening. The vessel loaded at London, and left, there on May 21, and calling in at Southampton for passengers nnd malls resumed her voyage on May 22. The loiiie had a fine weather run to Colon. Where she arrived on .Tune 7. While coaling was proceeding the passengers speut a few hours ashore. The ship pnsscd through Panama Canal without incident, and arrived at Balboa late on the night of June 7. The vessel continued her voyage at daybreak on the following day. Fine weather continued until Tuesday, when a southerly gale and high seas were encountered. The voyage was made pleasant by fancy dress dances, deck sports and games, and Father Neptune added to the Interest and nmusement of the trip by his crossing the Line ceremony. HERMES DISCHARGING. Laden with case oil. the tanker Hermes arrived at Auckland from Slugapore ut an eariy hour this morning. On arrival the vessel anchored In the stream for Inspection, and later berthed nt the western side of the Prince's wharf to put out the--local portion of her cargo before proceeding about the middle of next week to southern ports. On her recent trip the Hermes commenced londing at Singapore on May 24, and took her departure for New Zealand on June 5. Fair weather wns experienced until Snndny lust, when strong winds from the'south-west nnd heavy sens were encountered. The tanker took large quantities of water on , board, nnd was considerably buffeted. The following day the weather became worse, and ou Monday afternoon the Hermes reduced speed. For two and a half days the ; tanker was compelled to proceed at reduced speed with her head to the storm. .Much water was shipped, and the vessel wns badly battered, but came trough the storm undamaged. After Wednesday afternoon the conditions improved, and the remainder of the-.voyage was made without incident. The Hermes is a twin screw motor ship of C 768 tons, and was built during 1914, on tho Tyne. The engines were built in Holland. She wns specially constructed for the carriage of bulk oil, but can also carry case owned by the Netheiiand-ludla Tank StPamoll. as on her present voyage. She Is ship Company, and flies tbe Dutch flag. She is not a, stranger to this port, having arrived towards the end of 1922 with an'oil cargo from Singapore. On that occasion she discharged at the old Hobson Street wharf. The Hermes is commanded by Captain F. A. J. Moll, v.-ho has with him the following officers: Chief, Mr. W. A. M. Ouwerkerk: second, Mr. C. J. van Malland: chief engineer, Mr. C. van Denberg. She carries a crew of 47 all told, the officers being Dutch and- the - engine-room and- deck hands Chinese.
