NEWTON OUTPLAYS ATHLETIC.
Kewton thoroughly deserved their first whi of the season over Athletic on Saturday It was a fine open game nnd one full of'interest from start to finish. The wearers of the red and white made the pace a cracker, and although defeated, their opponents put up an excellent fight. Athletic missed the services of Dufty, their fullback, and they were also playing a couple of emergencies. Newton, on the other hand, had Hand, late of Devonport, playing for them and he was a tower of strength to his side. His goal-kicking was a feature of the match. The first half was fairly even and Athletic should have made better opportunities of their chances to score. It was during the second half that spectacular football was witnessed. Newton seemed to be inspired with unlimited confidence and threw the ball about in great style. The blue and golds also played a sterling gamo under somewhat adverse circumstances. From start to finish it was a good, clean, hard game, characterised with plenty of vim and dash. Once again Hargreaves stood out on the Newton side, and he was ably supported by Poison and Somers. It is been played on Carlaw Park many times the crowd would have been brought to its feet.
