ELTHAM, this day.-' A warning to hotelkeepers that'thq) must not permit bookmakers to ir* quent their premises, or transact butk ness there, was issued by the Egmpttl Licensing Committee at the anniaj meeting here. Sergeant Henry (Hawera) said 'Jin would not mention specific hotels,-hot asked the Committee to give a warning. The magistrate, Mr. Mowlem (chair* man of the Committee), said that'in New Zealand bookmakers were ."not existent," which was a pure supposition The sergeant's complaint was no' «lir» prise, as such happenings were common knowledge. A little reflection wai needed by licensees to see the risk thej] were running, not of being caught'or being involved with bookies, but with their licenses. If they permitted bookies to carry on business in their premises, they were not the fit and proper persons which the licenses d» manded they should be. The Committee endorsed the ter. geant's warning. ============= .~y\
