WOMEN IN HOTELS.
— 4 THE PRACTICE CONDEMNED. COMMENTS FROM THE BENCH. At the annual meeting of the Auckland Licensing Committee to-day the matter of women drinking in hotels was mentioned in the police report. "Whilst it is undesirable that women should be allotted a private bar," stated Sub-Inspector Rawle, "the action of those permitting it is quite within the law; and it is to the credit of the majority of the Auckland licensees that the system is not encouraged." Six hotels were reported as catering for women drinking on the premises, their names being: Albion, City, Shamrock, Rising Sun, Grosvenor, and Star (Newton).
"This drinking by women in hotels is one of our curses from the war," commented Mr. Poynton. "Before that most respectable women in New Zealand would not be seen drinking in a hotel. It is very desirable that the habit and practice should be discouraged. It is bad enough for a man to drink, but when a woman drinks it may wreck the home. I hope Auckland licensees will discourage the evil, as it has serious possibilities."
