GORDON BENNETT RACE.
THE START FROM BRUSSELS. BRUSSELS, June 8. Crowds witnessed the start of the Gordon Bennett balloon race ypsterday. There were IS entrants, including British. French, Belgian. Spanish, and Italian competitors (three each). also representatives of the United States (two) and Switzerland (one) .—Renter.
TOTTR BAIXOONS FAIL. BRITISH ELSIE DESTROYED. (Received 1 p.m.) BRUSSELS, June 8. Four balloons have come down in the Gordon Bennett race. They include the British balloon Elsie, -which had to land at Etaples and was subsequently destroyed. Two Spanish and one French balloon also descended in France.—A. and N.Z.
