RUGBY FOOTBALL.
A CLUB'S PROTEST. V,t , OBJECTION TO REFEREE. =' "5j Through their delegate, Mr. A. Belcher, the Grammar Old Boys' Club last night entered a protest against the appointment of Mr. G. Peace as the referee for the match, Grammar v. Marists, on Saturday. Mr. Belcher stated that he had been instructed to voice a protest, as his club felt that Mr. Peace had a bias against the Grammar School, and tho Grammar Old Boys and the speaker had the impression that the appointment would cause trouble.
Mr. H. Frost said that the relations; between the committee and tho refercea were very good, and the committee should .confirm arrangements made by the Appointment Board. He thought that, having voiced their feelings, tho Grammar Old Boys' Club should be willing to let by-gones be by-gones.
Mr. J. O'Brien (representing the Marist Club), thought that the appointment should be changed, as otherwise there was a probability of the Grammar team forfeiting the game. This view, however, was not shared by other members of the committee, who felt that the club should not be encouraged to endeavour to force the hand of the committee, and should be satisfied that having been forwarned, both the Referees* Association and the Union would be ou the alert to safeguard the interest of all clubs in the matter of impartiality of rulings.
