METAL FOR ROADING.
KAII.WAY CONCESSIONS. TROTEST AGAINST WITHDRAWAL.
It was reported at last night's meeting of the Auckland Automobile Association that the Railway Board was considering the question of revoking concession rates allowed on the conveyance of road metal for local bodies.
The secretary (Mr. G. W. Hutchison) stated he had communicated with the North Island Motor Union urging that body to enter a protest, and ask that the "matter be held over till the unions and local bodies concerned had been heard in the matter. He understood the Railways Board was taking the proposed action because the present rate was not payable. Another aspect of the case was that it was considered roads were in the nature of competitors to the railways. The secretary also expressed the opinion that a large proportion of rail-borne metal would be for local roads leading to and from the railways, thus acting as feeders to the railway system.
"A way out of the difficulty, he said, would be for the Railways Board to charge the usual rate to the Department dealing with local bodies; then the Department concerned could continue the concession.
The secretary's action was approved.
