THE BARQUE HAMBURG.
RUDDER GOES IN GALE. HARDSHIP AND ADVENTURE. (Received 1 p.m.) SYDNEY, this day. The barque Hamburg, which left Mcl- . bourne for the I'nited Kingdom wheatladen on April 18, returned to Sydney from a thrilling experience. After rounding New Zealand, 300 uiiUs off the Jiluff, she struck a violent gale and stripped her canvas. This continued for several days. There were mountainous yeas, then her rudder stock snapped, and she became out of control. The barque was knocked about by the gale, and it was impossible to make repairs. On the third day the weather moderated, and the crew, who were mostly composed of German apprentices, succeeded with much dillictilly in rigging a jury steering gear. Taking advantage of a favourable taut wind, the captain decided to make Sydney, tjiough New Zealand was nearer, sailing with a jury rudder for nearly 1000 miles. Fortunately it did not shift, otherwise the vessel would have been doomed. — (A. and X-Z. Cable.)
