CNE TREE HILL.

A PROGRESSIVE DISTRICT. REPORT OF ROAD BOARD.

The annual report of the One Tree Hill Bond Board, issued by the chair- | | man, Mr. Keg. G. Clark, states, inter alia: — The general advancement and prosperity of the district has beer, satisfactorily maintained. This is reflected by the number of building permits issued during the year for new buildings and alterations to the value of £128,91:"!. Of the foregoing 7-1 permits were issued, principally for dwellings. The hoard have endeavoured during the period under review to do a small amount of permanent work out of gen- | oral revenue. In this connection part of i Momona Road has been kerbed with I concreto kerbs manufactured by its own ! staff in the quarry, and channelled with I bituminous macadam, while the car- ' riageway between has been liberally j covered with tar macadam. A length of ! approximately eight chains of a solid i rock hank near the Penrose railway station has been cut down to the permanent level. Part of Hardington Street and part of George Street, which had never been formed and which were impassable to vehicular traffic, "have now been formed to suit local traffic conditions. Owing to the absence of a storm water drainage system, and the enormous cost to tbe ratepayers if such a system were to bo installed, the board has devoted a grent deal of attention to this serious problem. During the year, several soak holes have been sunk, and storm water cesspits and piping installed. With only one exception, these have proved satisfactory. Fire Brigade. Owing to the difficulty experienced in proem-ins a suitable allotment at a reasonable price, the Green Lane Volunteer Firo Brigade has been working under great difficulties and disabilities during the past year. The board have recently purchased an allotment nt the Great South Road end of Green Lane, and nre now proceeding with tbe erection of a suitable fire brigade station. This should be completed very shortly. Tho amount of water pumped during the year under review was 73.1fi0,25S gallons, being an increase of over 20 per cent. Tbe demand upon the supply by tbe consumers was always met even during the driest part of the year, and tbe board did not find it necessary to curtail the supply or place restrictions upon tho use of tbe garden hose. As the number of houses in the district is very rapidly increasing, it is evident that a further increase in the water consumption must inevitably take place during the current year, and while the present steam pumping plant is working at its highest maximum efficiency, it has its limits of 15,000 gallons of water per bour. Therefore, to meet this inevitable increase in tho water consumption, the board are at present installing an electric plant, consisting of a Thompson-Houston motor and a Rees-Roturbo cen'rifugal pump capable of lifting 20.1jD0 gallons o/ water per hour into our reservoir, which is situated some 000 ft above the level of the pumping station. The installation of this plant will ensure tbat any increased demands likely to be made in water consumption during tbe immediate future will be adequately met. Drainage Extensions. During the year, tbe board have let i a contract to Messrs. W. Stevenson and ! Sons for tbe drainage reticulation of j the eastern area, as far as the Harp of ! Erin, for the sum of i. 14.560, to which about £1300 will have to be added for the connection with the Auckland and Suburban Drainage Board's outfall sewer. Tenders have been called, closing at tbe end of April, for the drainage reticulation of tbe western area, the construction of pumping station nnd settling tanks, and for the installation of the electric automatic pumps and motors. In this connection, owing to the configuration of tbe country, it will be necessary to raise the sewage from the western area, from a point near the Cornwall Park gates on the Manukau Road, by means of automatic electric pumps, to the top of the hill in Campbell Road, where it will gravitate down to the Drainage Board's outfall sewer near the Harp of Erin. It is anticipated that all the sewers will he completed before the Auckland and Suburban Drainage Board are ready to receive tbe sewage into their new outfall sewer. Arrangements have been made to light the Great South Road, Manukau Road, and part of Penrose with electric street lamps. On new subdivisions about 83 chains of new roads have been actually formed and dedicated, while more than three miles of new roads are about to be formed, or in the course of being formed. Tbe report concludes with warm tributes to the conscientious devotion to duty of Mr. William Hogg, who' has served the ratepayers of One Tree Hill for 30 years, and to tho efficient but economical management of the engineer, Mr. Dawson.
