TRADE OF EMPIRE.
A PESSIMISTIC REPORT. BRITISH SUPREMACY GOING. HELP FROM DOMINIONS. (By Cable.— Fress Association.—Copyright. ) , (Received 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, April 14. A lengthy statistical report, issued by the Empire Trade Development Union, points out that while 21 foreign countries made considerable post-war trade progress. British industries were stag- ' nant or declining. British exports wore j not showing signs of any real recovery. • Foodstuffs imported into Britain in- I creased by £62.000.000 last year to a ! total of £555,000,000, whereas British manufactures which pay for imported foods, arc 25 per cent below pre-war , figures. It would have been worse but j for the increase of exports to the Dominion.-. There have also been huge increases in imported manufactures. The report concludes that if the British race is again to become supreme industrially it is only possible by immediate drastic action and association with the Dominions, on which overseas trade will become increasingly dependent. — (A. and X.Z.
