FAMINE IN NOVA SCOTIA

— » ■ RESULT OF MINERS' STRIKE. SIXTY THOUSAND* AFFECTED. STARVING WOMEN AND CHILDREN. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received I.SO p.m.) SYDNEY (N.S.J, April 10. A total of 5000 persons, mostly women and children, are facing starvation as a result of a strike of coal miners in the mines operated by the British Empire Steel Corporation, which has lasted one month. Thousands more of the 60,000 affected miners and dependents are living in filth and squalor under conditions which have doubled the death rate and filled the hospitals. Relief committees are doling out all the contributions received from the Canadian public, but claim to be only able to give enough to keep body and soul together. They are no longer able to supply meat. The strike began on March 6, following negotiations undertaken by the company in December for a 10 per cent wage reduction, which were broken off in January. Nothing more was done until the company reilused further credit to the workers in the company stores at the beginning of March, contending that many were overdrawing their credit in enormous amounts. A total of 12,000 miners then walked out. Tbe strike has been the subject of lively discussions in the Canadian House of Commons.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.)
