BOROUGH COUNCILS.

NEWMARKET. At last evening's usual meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council, the Mayor (Mr. S. Donaldson) presided, and Councillors G. E. Smerdon, A. Kent, N» Kelleway, W; T. Sawbridge, H. J. Cooper, P. S. Eoone, P. J. O'Meara, and T. J. Watts were present. ""* The Mayor was chosen to represent the council at a meeting to be held on April 20. when financial and other matters connected -with the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition will be considered. A letter was received from Mr. R. A. Barfoot, drawing attention to the uncovered state of the borough refuse collection carts, and suggesting that the council might consider something in the nature of coverings. The letter was referred to the Streets Committee. Mr. A. Grevillo-TValUer, borough engineer, reported that the concrete paving of the northern side of Khyber Pas* Eoad, between railway bridge and Claremont Street, was complete, and that work was : now in hand on the excavation of the ength above Pork Eoad. The concrete at Maungawhau Koad will be opened to traffic on the 14th inst. The Waterworks Committee reported that it was of the opinion that the branch fire station in Kailway Street is unnecessary, and that this view is supported by the captain and members of the brigade. The station was originally placed there to house material sufficient to cope with any outbreak in Railway Terrace, to which it was almost impossible to reach with the fire engine. Acting on the advice of the brigade, the committee therefore recommended that the present branch station be removed, and a box sufficient for storing a quantity of hose be placed in a suitable position in the Terrace for the purpose of dealing with fires in that locality. The proposal was adopted. Regarding the proposed clock for the municipal buildings, the Building Committee wrote stating that the question had been considered further, and that it was hoped that, in a supplementary report, it would be possible to submit competitive prices for the erection aud installation of a suitable clock. MOUNT EDEN. The Mount Kden Borough Council met last evening, his Worship the Mayor (Mr. E. H. Potter) presiding. Engineer's Eeport.—ln his report to the Council, the engineer (Mr. J. Rogers) said that work on the various sewerage contracts was progressing favourably and satisfactorily. .Surveys had been made and plans prepared for sewerage of the block Prospect Terrace, Ewington Avenue, Kenyon Avenue, Wilford Road, and Woodford Road; also the block between Sherwood Road and the city bundary, extending from Dominion Road to Brentwood Avenue. Surveys Were being made for sewerage of blocks on the eastern side of Mount Eden Road, in the vicinity of Windmill Road and Disraeli Street, and on the west £ide of Dominion Road from Onslow Road towards the city boundary. The concreting of Dominion Road from the city boundary to Boundary Road had been completed, and the concreting of Mount Eden Road was making rapid progress, and promised early completion. TAKAFTTNA. At a meeting of the Takapuna Borough Council there were present: The Mayor (Mr. J. W. Hayden), and Messrs. T. B. Arthur, M. L. Wllkins, G. H. Mntthews. J. Collins, P. E. N. Gaudin, A. H. Wilkie, E. G. Tncker, F. W. Suckling and M. E. Thompson. A letter from the Belmont-Bayswater Progressive Association was received, asking that a fair share of the loan moneys authorised for drainage be spent in their area. The letter was referred to the incoming committee. On the recommendation of the building inspector twelve permits of a total value of £5782 were issued. In writing that it was understood that the council proposed to substitute concrete for bitumen on the Bayswater Road, the Belmont-Bayswater Progressive Association matte Eeveral suggestions on the matter. It was decided that discussion be deferred as the matter was one for the Incoming council to deal with.
