THREE-FIGURE SCORE.
POLICE COURT CHAMPIONSHIP.
Scoring steadily at the rate of three or four convictions every few months, George' Heighway passed the century some time ago, and he had compiled a total of 145 when he faced Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., at the Police. Court today.
For some time Mr. Poynton had "pegged away" in the style of the English slow bowlers, but Heighway had continued to increase his total, despite legal "twists" and "breaks."
The police, in support of the ehavges against Heighway, that he was drunk in Domain Drive yesterday, and that he was.deemed to be an idle and disorderly person with insufficient means of support, stated that when he was arrested he admitted having just consumed a bottle of methylated spirits. His pockets on being turned out revealed his total wealth at sd.
Mr. Poynton: Your list 3s getting "big, Heighway. This is your 145 th appearance !
Heighway: I've got another job to go to, sir.
And so he had. for Heighway. who is OS next birthday, was sent up' to interview Mr. Vincent at Mount Eden about a job which will keep him employed for a month.
"He will get the drink out of his system up there." was the magistrate's consoling remark, as Heighway left the dock.
