DEEP-SEA FISHING.

SPORT AT RUSSELL. A "DOUBLE HEADER." iFioin Our Own cosresnonaent.i RUSSELL, Monday. Messrs. Buddie and Studholme, in the launch Alma Ci... broke the record for the number of big flsrt caught in one day by a launch, having secured four large 'swordfish weighing 3201b, 2501b. 2S7lb and 2081b. Mr. Buddies monster put up a very hard fight and almost tired out the fisherman.

Messrs. G. Warnc and Syd. Irving, in the Rosemary, did what wo hart better term in future, "the double header," hooking and landing two swordfish at the same time. They. weighed 2531b (length 10ft Bin. girth 3ft" Tin) ami 2101b (length flft lOin. and 3ft T\n). Mr. Warnc only had 300 yard? on his reel and Mr. Syd. Irving only 100 yards. The latter's fish put up a great battle, breaking twenty times, and owing to the short length of line on the reel, required great skill to land him. The two fish were hooked off Piercy Island and hauled alongside ten miles away. This is the third time this well-known boatman has been aboard when the "double header" has been done. The first occasion was with Messrs. Campbell, of England, and Barry, of the Thames, in J 914 or 1015-, and the second with C'ppt. -Wentworth and Mr. Kiswich this season.

Mr. Buddie one clay last week caught the- second largest swordfish of this season on a single line. It tipped the scales at 4721b and was slightly different from others in respect of its spear and lower jaw, and was much shorter, rounder and thicker. .

Mr. Sam Ludbrook, of Tokomaru Bay, in the launch Ozone", caught last week three swordfish. the weights of which were 3041b, 3791b and 3341b; and Mrs. Vernon Reed has a second monster to her credit, a swordfish of 2091b.

Mr. G. Lindo-Ferguson, of Waimate North, in the Alma G, had good sport with two "swordies" of 3261b and 2841b.

Mr. Leon Warne, of Russell, went out last week in the Rosemary and secured a mako shark of 1811b and a swordfish of 2611b.

Mr. Neville Cook and Mr. B. Williams, of Russell, had good fun capturing two swordfish. one of them 2321b and the other 3131b.

Another local resident, Mr. Strawbridge, went out in his private launch with Mr. E. Arlidge, of the Alma G, as pilot, and came back enraptured with the sport, having been successful in landing a mako shark of 2891b and a swordfish of 2521b.

Mr. J. J. Taylor, of Auckland, arrived by the Ngapuhi on Tuesday morning, went out to the cape in the Alma G., caught a fine swordfish weighing 20611), and returned to catch the same boat back to Auckland in the evening, takinothe monster with him to show his friends.

Mr. Bert Court, of Auckland, in his own launch Jean, had very hard luck, for he fastened to a large\nako shark thi 1 ■ r Pla r n ?;t for hours, noticed that Is line had frayed a little. He fixed this and the monster gave a fine display but eventually cut the wire trace with its teeth and got away. Mrs Court, who was in the launch with her , husband, thoroughly enjoyed the thrills l of the exciting sport. Your correspondent has been informed that next . season a party of twenty sportsmen from Australia intend to visit Russell for the deep sea flshim? Just at present the big'fish seem To be more plentiful than ever, and angers \ can be fairly certain of i>. catch.
