OBITUARY.

MR. JOHN MUL.VANEY. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Another link with the early days of the. north has been severed by the death of Mr. John Mulvaney, at Whangarei, at the advanced age of 82 years. Mr. Mulvaney, who was. a bachelor, had '>een resident*in the 'district for over sixty years, and was hale and hearty to within three days of his death. Born in Ayrshire, he came to the colony as a. young , man in the ship Resolute, arriving on 26th June, 18G3, the voyage occupying 96 days. Coming to the north soon after, he took up farming, and at times engaged in gum digging, timberworking, and telegraph line laying. Gradually he acquired interests in Whangarei land, which to-day is laid out in residential sites. Included in this was part of the site of the coal mines at'Kamo. As an instance of the hardships of the early pioneering days the late Mr. Mulvaney on one occasion, accompanied by the' late Mr. Albert Read, walked to Auckland from Whangarei to give evidence in a Court ease. While foreman for the late Mr. H. Cheeseman, deceased had many trying experiences in driving over the northern roads, when they were in a much different condition than to-day. Deceased is survived by three sisters, Mrs. H. Cadman, of Whangarei, Mrs. Mulgrove, of Karao, and Mrs. Bartley. of Mangonui.
