The public, for the most part, were well nn the spot in their selections at the onunake meeting, for live Hist vavountes and two seconds scored, the otiier event b"ing- won by Awake, which was ruurth lancy. r Reed rode six winners at the Napier Park meeting and three at opunake, which makes his total 51) lor the current season This is twelve more than C. Emersou and M. McCarten, who dead-heated for' first place last season, piloted. Mark Time, it is stated, which has been off the scene for some time, met with a mishap a Tew days ago and could not he accepted Tor at the Rangitikel meeting Mr. J. B. GaisTord is having no luck Witt this horse since he won the Manawatu Cup last season. Reremoana is rairly smart over a short course and he again showed his ability when he won the St. Patrick's Handicap at Opunake on Tuesday. Rational and Pouma were in charge at the entrance to the straight, hut Reremoana then put in his claim and scored comfortably by a couple or lengths. An inquiry was held at Napier last Saturday into interference suffered by \V_arlti in the concluding- event and it •was found that both Idanoe and hoau Ko_- had crossed Whariti. Their riders, 11. .Martin and A. Grilllth, were suspended lor fourteen days. Taward, a two-year-old by Bisog-ne— Coronet mare, appears to have a fair dash or pace, for he won the Mald_n Plate, seven furlongs, at Opunake, comfortably by six lengths in 1.30. He is owned and trained by W. Pine, and had been placed on a couple of occasions previously. Solferange appears to be a fair sort. He Is a three-year-old gelding by Solferino —Angele, and has started on a dozen occasions this season, winning three events and being placed on a similar number of occasions. He was started twice at the Opunake meeting, being second to QulllUre and winning the concluding event, tbe Farewell Handicap. It Is stated that Malatour ran a good raco in the McVay Memorial at Napier Part and appeared to be a likely winner at the home turn. He, however, failed to stay on over the last bit and nnished tflird. Malatour was paying a big price to win. He is a full brother to Te Kara ana a hair brother to Queen March. The yearling hair brother to Inrerno by Martian—Ayah, purchased by Mr. E. Riddirord, has been causing his trainer some trouble. He did not make a good recovery from an operation, but be has taken a turn for the better recently and hopes are entertained that be will soon be aU ri&ht again. The Lamb showed great promise when he was racing at the last Wanganui meeting. The Great Northern Champagne Stakes. Tor which rorreits were declared last night, contains material for a good rare, hut if Lady Cavendish is brought north ravouritisin will probably be divided between her and Merry Damon. Awake did not race straight at his hurdles at Opunake. but he had too much pace Tor the others, according to a Southern writer. He was pulling hard all the time, and when asked to go up to the leader, Pourihoiho, did so v« cy quickly and llnally walked in. When nominations were received for the Canterbury Jockey Club's Great Easter and Autumn Handicaps the name or Civility appeared in the list ror the Great Autumn. The entry was made by telegram, but when the letter connrming it was received rrom H. L. Russell, it was evident he intended entering his filly [or the Great Easter. On request the original telegram was looked up and it was round that the message had been mutilated in transmission, and Civility was correctly nominated ror the Great Easter, and not for the Great Autumn Handicap. Civility will, thererore, start in the Great Easter. TURF TALE FROM THE SOUTH. (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") CHRISTCHURCH, Friday.
