SENATE AND PRESIDENT.

J. 3 NEW ATTORNEY-GENERAL. 3 _____ BUT NOT MR. C. B. WARREN. WASHINGTON, March 18. The controversy between the Presi- - dent. Mr. Calvin Coolidge. and the - Senate concerning , the appointment of i nn AttomeT-General to Mr, JI. r F. Stone, has been settled. Mr. Cool : d£re i yesterday nominated for the position Mr. John Sareent, his old personal friend, who was formerly AttorneyGeneral for the State of Vermont instead of Mr. Charles B. Warren, whom the Senate t-wice rejected. Mr. Sarsrent's appointment was confirmed h-7 the Senate without a dissentient vote. The fresh nomination was pent to the Senate shortly after Mr. Coolidee had i announced that Mr. Warren ..had del clined to accent his offer to appoint him during the recess. Senators Curtis and "Robinson, leaders of the Republicans and Democrats respectively, called at White House to inquire if the President had any further business to lay before the Senate. Mr. Coolidse replied by dispatching the nomination of Mr. Sargent, thus ending . the bitter controversy which had been wp"ed for the past week. \ The Senate is expected to adiourn on " Wednesday. It is" now disclosed that Mr. Coolidse definitely offered in a . letter written yesterday to appoint Mr. i Warren during the recess. Mr. Warren J wrote in reply declining the offer. He " said he deenW appreciated the President's confidence in him, but felt that his withdrawal would prove to be a J public service and would be beneficial ■ both to Mr. Coolidge and the Republican D party. ' The general feelinsr is that a eombinaI tion of circumstances prompted Mr. Coolidfre to abandon the fizht. The first was Mr. Warren's intimation that he did not wish to accept a recess appointment, and the second was that Mr. Coolidsre did not wish to insist upon mnkinsr such an appointment. Now the smoke of battle his cleared j away it is ev-irlent the Senate has I won a dec : s ; ve victory over the Tresii dent, whose fir«;t since assnm'naj [offioe in his own rio-ht was an unusually sensational one.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.)
