POLICE COURT.

• (Before Mr. J. W. Poynton. S.M.. and Messrs. A. Rosser and j. R. Self, J.P.s.) ASSAULT DENIED. Charles McGeehan (53) denied that he was drunk in Kelson Street yesterday, and also a charge that he did assault Daniel Campbell. Campbell said that about six o'clock last evening; he was outside an hotel in Kelson Street filling his pipe, when accused approached him in a dancing attitude, and caught hold of him by the shoulders. Witness fell and lifted up his stick to defend himself. McGeehan never struck witness. Constable Watkins deposed to seeing McGeehan strike Campbell twice. McGeehan was drunk. In evidence accused stated that Campbell struck him on the eye with a heavy walking stick, so he struck him back. McGeehan, who possessed a lengthy list of "p.C.'s," was fined £2 or three days on the drunkenness charge, while he was convicted and discharged for assaulting Campbell. TO PAY THE MEDICAL EXPENSES. After having been in gaol for a week on remand for medical treatment. Thomas Gunning- (46) appeared for sentence on a charge of helpless drunkenness in I'rincea Street. He was convicted and ordered to pay fl 8/ for medical expenses, in default two days' imprisonment. HE LAUGHED AT PROBATION. "This man is one of those who just laugh at probation."" said Mr. Poynton. in sentencing William James Trainor. a young man, to three months in Mount Eden gaol for failing to comply with the terms and conditions of his release on probation. Senior Detective Hammond said that Trainor had been following up the Waikato race meetings. The probation officer (Mr. W. J. Campbell) stated that accused was before the Court only on January 8 last, when he was fined £3 for committing a breach of the peace, and a further £10 for breach of probation. Since then Trainor cleared away and had only just been located. ANOTHER PROBATIONER GETS GAOL. McCarten McAleese (23), when charged with failing to comply with the terms and conditions of his release on probation, pleaded that he had lost his papers, and had become frightened. Mr. Campbell said that in August last accused was given two years probation on a theft charge. In October last he cleared out, and had neither reported himself nor made restitution. "I'll pay the money back if you give mc another chance, sir,"' said McAleese. Mr. Foynton: I will give you another chance after you come out. You will have to be punished for this. Fourteen days' imprisonment. Now you will see just where you are heading for. BY-LAW BREACHES. Several motorists were prosecuted by the Chief City Traffic Inspector, Mr. Geo. It. Hogan, for offences against the city by-laws. For failing to furnish an omnibus to take the place of another bus, J. L. (uinning and John I). Stuart were each fined £1 and costs. John McManus. on charges of driving an omnibus without a license, and dri\ing an unlicensed omnibus, was lined £1 and costs on cadi charge. R. S. Stevenson, who left a motor car unattended in Sliurtland Street fur more than l>o minutes, was fined h>. and cost?. For a similar offence. James MeCleary J was ordered to pay ousts. I Samuel (Jreen and C. K. Love, charged with speeding on Graf ton Bridgv, were each fined £1 mul ousts. For driving his m >tor car in a dangerous manner. Harry Spencer James was fined £o and costs.
