TROUBLESOME SAILORS.

ON MITER AORAN6I.

REFUSE IN THE HARBOUR.

The vagaries of some members of the Aorangi's crew have already been illustrated in a Police Court proceeding. Yesterday at the Harbour Board meeting further evidence of it was provided. The Medical Officer of Health complained that refuse had been thrown into the harbour, and a filthy condition created. This state of affaire could not be tolerated if the health of the port was to be preserved. It was recommended that proceedings be taken against the ship for a breach of the board's by-laws.

According to a letter from the Union Company instructions had been given on the ship before entering port for the strict observance of the port's by-laws. Regret was expressed that the master's orders had not been obeyed, and the trouble was attributed to certain troublesome members of the crew.

The board decided not to proceed further with the matter, but to take action should any further breaches occur. It was mentioned that more trouble was experienced with mail boats in this respect than with any other vessels. The board's by-laws require that ship's refuse should be collected in bins or cans while the vessel is in port and deli \ - ered to the refuse carts when they make the daily call, or dumped into a barge* which is supplied at the request and at the expense of the ship, and disposed of outside the harbour limits.
