BROADCASTING IN AMERICA.
The British Broadcasting Co. has issued (says the London "Morning Post") a statement giving the impressions of Captain Eekersley, their chief engineer, who has just returned from America, on the relative merits of English and American broadcasting.
Captain Eekersley is of opinion that English broadcasting cannot in any sense of the word be said to be behind American. The problem of serving the ! public in America is, owing to the vast i area thorp, different from the similar I problem here, lleceivers are all designed ! for long-distamo reception, and are not Uesijrned to give pure reproduction in i the same way that die problem has been i tackled in England. _ , I Although the conditions obtaining in I the two countries are so widely diverpent, Captain Eckeraley is convinced That British broadcasting, where the uniiv of cctro!, both technical and artistic, is possible, is vastly superior to the happy-go-lucky method in Americii. "There are said to be 530 odd stations in America," hi- says, "but it i« admitted that perhaps at the most only one hundred of these can in any way compare in power or programme with our 'main stations. Stations divide time. constantly— that is to s.iy, if there nro ten stations in Chicago these will not all work at once, but w>ll divide time so that the variety of programme that has often been talked of, although it is sometimes greater than that in certain parts of England, is in general less thaa has been thought."
