OBITUARY.

MAORI WAR VETERAN. MR. THOMAS EYTOX. Another of the few remaining Maori war veterans passed away nn Saturday —Mr. Thomns Eyton. who ivas 82 year's of age. He was the son of a lieutenantcommander in the Royal Navy, and was born and educated in Kssex. Receiving a nomination to a clerkship in Trinity TTouse. London, which ha.s to do with the lighthouse and similar services, he remained there for two years, but the outdoor life called him. and he decided to emigrate to Xew Zealand, which was then much in the public eye st Home. He arrived here in 1562, Rnd the Maori War gave the adventurous young Englishman all the excitement for which he thirsted. He first joined the Otahulni Cavalry, in 1803. and was afterwards with the Tarnnaki Bushrangers and with the Pa tea Light Horse, serving up to ISttO. During the war he was present at the engagements fought at Manutahi. Otaupo. and Nukumaru, and other*. After the Tvar he went to Wellington, where he was in the Treasury for five years, and then left the Government, service to enter private business. For a number of years Mr. Eyton resided in Auckland, and always took a great interest in the Veterans' Association. His comrades from the Veterans' Home at Mount Roskill trill be present in uniform at his funeral, which is taking place this afternoon at the Waikaraka Cemetery, Onehungn. Deceased leaves a daughter, Mrs. McPherson, who lives in Fiji.
