SAVE THE BUSH.
A letter which appears in our correspondence columns to-day draws attention to a matter which should be of interest to the people of Auckland, and particularly tv the residents of the marine boroughs on the other side of the harbour. Almost the only surviving patch of native bush within easy reach of the many thousands now living on the Xorth .Shore is the wooded area at the head of Hellyer's Creek, for many years part of the property of .Mr. .1. 11. Withcford. As the estate is now being
cut up there, is a strong probability that the bush will all be cleared away, and what might become a delightful public resort fur the people of the North Shore nnd the city will bo irretrievably destroyed. We need not. enlarge upon tho beauties of our native bush, nor
upon the value of such picturesque spots to the cities fortunate enough to have them in close proximity. The rapid growth of the boroughs on the other
side of the harbour makes it. imperative that where possible considerable areas should be reserved for the enjoyment of the general public, and this patch of native bush, some 4(1 aires in extent,
oilers v unique opportunity for the investment of public money in a good cause. Il would nut require any serious financial effort on the part of Ihe citizens of Devonport nnd the adjacent boroughs tn secure this beautiful Lush and conserve it for the pleasure and benefit of the people for generations to com-. The city, as an inter.-,,e.l party. might assist, though primarily this is a matter for the northern boroughs, and with the help of a Covorninonl subsidy the Hcllycr's Creek bush might rvcti now he saved from tl,,- linn,ls ol' the spoiler. Energetic net inn by the responsible authorities should speedily secure I ho desired end.
