LOCAL BODIES.
DEVONPORT. The Mayor (Mr. T. Lamont) presided over the meptln. of the Devonport Rornueh Council last eveninc. There were also present: Messrs. A. V. Fraer, S. Bond, J. Mays. S. I.uxford, E. 11. Little, A. Bart lev, and T. Hislop. For the position of clerk of works, nut of thirty applicants, four were selected for personal interview. As the resni, 0 f a ballot. Mr. .1. Clark was appointed lo Ihe position. The council gave permission to the Band Contest Committee for visitinc hands to practise ~v the Domain and Cheltenham Beach during the coming contest week. The council's assistance towards a proposal for municipal baths nt Cheltenham Beach, at an estimated cost of £ ;inno. was requested in a letter received from the Devonport Swimming Club. The cluh asked that a poll fur tin* purpose of raising a loan be taken. The council decided that as its present term of office expired shortly, the matter would he deferred until the new council took office. ProvidPd the residents contributed onehalf of the cost of creel ion of a flood licht at the north end of Cheltenham Beach, the council agreed to pay the other half. The residents will also have to provide a diving punt lo compleic ihe facilities for night bathing. TAKAPUNA. The Takapuna Forouch Council met. lasl ! evening, Mr. T. B. Arthur occupying the chair in the absence of the Mayor (Mr J. W. Haydeni. There were also' present ■ Messrs. J. Collins. M. K. Thompson. F.. G.! Tucker. A. 11. Wilkie, M. 1.. Wilkins andi V. W. Further, it was resolved to! appeal to ratepayers to take advantage of; tbe biweekly collection, and to keep tiVv tins. etc.. in sanitary order. ' The engineer was authorised to draw up j a plan for the improvement of Walter's Hill, the stretch of road from Belmont to l the Devonport boundary.
