UNDEVELOPED WEALTH.
NEW ZEALAND FISHERIES. BIG INDUSTRY POSSIBLE. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") THAMES, this day. Interesting facts relating to the fishing industry in New Zealand were given by the Hon. G. J. Anrlerion, Minister of Marine, at a social function tendered to him and Sir James Parr by the Harbour Board at Thames last evening, Mr. B. Coulter (chairman of the board) presiding. The Minister stated that in Auckland there was in process of construction large works where fish would be dealt with in many ways, so that there would bo no need to dump any fish 'aught, whatever their variety. An Aberdeen fish expert had informed him that the fish in New Zealand waters were equal to fish exported from Home waters, and that New Zealand would find a rich market in the East, where British and Newfoundland fish were sent. There was no reason why a big industry should not. be -established in exportation of dried fish of the class exported from the Old Country, but we required scientific knowledge. There was no reason why New Zealanders should not go to 3ritain and Nova Scotia and study the industry. Nova Scotians desired the sole right of cray fishing and preserving here, but such a privilege could not be given, as the Dominion had not, and did not, want to see such monopolies. Ihe New Zealand Government had been criticised for permitting Norwegian whalers threo years' sole right to fish in the Far South. That privilege was granted by the Imperial Government before the Ross Dependency was handed over, but as soon as that period expired Ross Sea would be thrown open to all our people to exploit.
