A "BORROWED" CAR.

TAKEN TO ROTORUA. TWO YEARS FOR THEFT,

"This taking of motor cars is a very serious thing for the owners," said Chief Detective Cummings when a man named Andrew Peter Jensen (20) was charged before Mr. J. W. Poynton at the Police Court to-day with converting to his own use a Chevrolet motor ear and stealing a quantity of fancy goods and drapery. Mr. Cummings pointed out that very often in such eases the machine was damaged and the owner could sometimes ill afford the

expense. "And that is not the only evil of it," added Mr. Poynton; '"if a man makes up his mind to commit a crime in the country or anywhere at a distance he can simply appropriate some handy car and rush off and so the task of detecting crime is greatly increased." According to the story of Detective Knight, to the charges contained in which accused pleaded guilty, the car belonged to one of Macky Logan's travellers and was taken from where it was standing in Elliott .Street. There were a lot of valuable samples in the car, and these were left by Jensen at the house where he was living. The car was recovered, and Jensen was arrested, at Rotorua.

Chief Detective Cummings said the act was a very bold one. He pointed out that Jensen had been previously convicted at Wanganui, Tnvercargill and Auckland, the charge in the last instance being forgery.

Mr. Poynton sentenced Jensen to two years' reformative treatment on the charge of theft, and. in order that the public might realise that the taking of motor cars in the manner of which Jensen had been guilty must be cheeked, a sentence of three months was imposed in eonneetion with that part of the charge, sentences to be concurrent. The magistrate pointed out that the accused had previously received a sentence of six months' reformative treatment, but it had not seemed to do him much good. This time his sentence must be longer.
