MOTHER AND DAUGHTER.

TAKEN FROM A HOME. A case of affection over-riding a mother's judgment was the explanation given at the Onehunga Police Court this morning when Mrs. Mary Jane Bates was charged with obstructing tho police in the discharge of their duty. Sergeant J. A. Cruickshank informed the presiding Justices, Messrs. H. J. Davies and J. Laking, that a daughter? of Mrs. Bates lead been committed to a receiving home in Auckland a few months ago. According to tho regulations th<s inmates were not allowed to leave the premises at night without the authority of the matron. On December 24 Mrs. Bates took her daughter away without receiving such authority, and refused to let her return when requested to do so by the police. Sergeant Cruickshank received definite instruction .to arrest the girl and restore her to the home last Saturday. Mrs. Bates then Trent to the police station with the girl, created a scene, and tried to prevent the police from doing their duty. She also used some lurid language. Sergeant Cruickshank was compelled to lock Mrs. Bates up for her own protecj tion, where she had been until this morning. Mrs. Bates defended her conduct by saying that she wanted to take her daughter to a doctor to see if he could do her any good. She promised not to repeat the offence and to abide by the rules of the home for visiting her daughter. Upon this understanding the defendant was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon.
