RACING NEWS.

A.T.C. SUMMER MEETING. CUP DAY AT EPSOM. LOCANDA "MAC WINS THE BIG EVENT. GLEXELG THE DERRBY. The Auckland Trotting Club's summer meeting was opened on Saturday. The weather was showery, but towards noon cleared, and the racing at Alexandra Park was favoured with fine weather till the last race, when rain again set in. There was a very large attendance, and ihe racing was most j interesting throughout. A Hot Favourite Scores. The programme was inaugurated with the Introductory Handicap, and Napland was made a hot favourite, carrying nearly two and a-half times as much as The Tartar, with L'eter McDonald and Elsa Nore most fancied of the others. The public started oil' well, for the favourite went, away nicely, and goin-. alon:* the back was second to Ngatira, with Sherwood's Surprise, ('olden (late and Elsa Nore next. Ngatira and Napland were together pas-ing the stewards' stand, but Ngatira left his feet, and Xapland was left in charge from Ngatira, Klsa Nore, Golden Cato, Loch Lomond and Lady Kirn. Napland drew out along the back from Ngatira, which was about lour lengths ahead of Elsa Nore, with Golden Gate, Audex and T.och Lomond next. Elsa Nore then put in a run. and was alongside Ngatira crossing the top, but a little later this pair broke, and Napland was left well clear of Golden Gate and Loch Lomond. Napland easily held off Golden Gate, beating him by a length, with Loch Lomond a length and a-half away third, a similar distance in front of Audex. Flora-true, Elsa Nore, Ngatira and Peter Tracey were the next to finish. The winner is trained by W. J. Tomkinson, Canterbury.

A Profitable Purchase. Dr. Dillon was made only about a £50 better favourite than Ruby Huon for tho. December Handicap, with Scandal and Admiral Rood next in request. Gratton Thorpe was in command when the field reached the back, with Toll Chimes, Doctor Dillon. Bawldy, Locanda and Ruby Huon next. Doctor Dillon had taken charge across the top and going past the stand had Gratton Thorpe, Ruby Huon, Anizoram and Toll Chimes as his nearest attendants. Doctor Dillon and Ruby Huon were in close company along the back with Gratton Thorpe and Anizoram next. Doctor Dillon mixed it coming into the straight and Glandore ran up second but in the run home Ruby Huon held her own to win by a head from Glandore, which beat Doctor Dillon by two lengths with Toll Chimes a Bimilar distance away fourth. Then came Darknite, Koniniwood and Anizoram. The winner was only purchased that morning by Messrs. Newdick Bros from Mr. W. Balloch, a Melbourne sportsman. Ruby Huon was one of the team W. J. Tomkinson brought over with him recently. The Cup Race. Great Hope, Blue Mountain King, and Realm were the defections from the Trotting Cup, leaving 13 to contest tiie stake. Ahuriri was made about f 125 better favourite than tho bracket Acron and Lady Joan, with Logan Chief, Jewel, Man-o'War, and Locanda Mac all carrying over £1500 each. Lady Joan failed to leave properly, and Ahuriri did not go off too well. Locanda Mac, Comedy Chief, and Jewel were the early leaders, but as they approached the stewards' stand Jewel broke and went back on Hypo, which was behind, with the result that \V. Kelßey, his driver, was thrown out, and Jewel had to be pulled up. Locanda Mac was in charge going out of the straight, with Comedy Chief, All 8011, Acron, Logan. Chief, Dreamalion, First Carbine, and Ahuriri racing as named. Logan Chief had run up third along the back to Locanda Mac and Comedy Chief, while Acron and All Bell wore next. Locanda Mac held m is position past the stand and along the back for the last time, where his closest, attendants were Logan Chief, Acron, Ahuriri, Dreamalion, and First Carbine. Locanda Mac was first into the straight from Logan Chief and Ahuriri. and in the run home he beat Logan Chief by a length and three-quarters, with Ahuriri two and a-half lengths away third, a head in front of Pitaroa. Man-o'-War, Acron, Dreamalion, Lady Joan, and First Carbine were next to finish.

The handsome gold cup which goes to the owner of the winner Locanda Mac, was presented to Miss Gunn by the president, Mr. ,T. Rowe, who congratulated Miss C'unn on her success and hoped that she would not be the last lady to win the event. A gold mounted whip was also presented to Mr. A. Fleming, driver of Locanda Mac. "Waikaha Scores. Don Douglas and Cole Drift were the only ones to decline their engagements in the Parnell Handicap. "Maggie Pronto was made shout £30 better favourite than Waikaha, while Haricot was also well supported, being the only one other to carry over £1000. Spirit Bell was in charge when they reached the stand with Maggie Pronto, Waikaha, Haricot, and Nipper next. The order was much the same till the straight was reached again, where Nipper took charge from Spirit Bell, Waikaha, Haricot, Battery Bell and Bronze Patch. Along the back for the last time Waikaha moved up and was on terms with Nipper entering the straight, Spirit Bell and Haricot being some distance back. In the run to the post Waikaha took charge and won by a length and a-half from Spirit Bell, which got up to beat the tiring Nipper by half a length. Haricot, Bronze Patch, Malmsbury, Battery Bell, "Marble Star and Homeleigh Dick were the next to finish. The Derby. The four three-year-olds carded for the Great Northern Dorby wont to the post. Kohara carried only £29 more than Glenclg, while the other two were comparatively neglected. Glenelg and Kohara went away together, while Our Jessie and Rosie Thorpe did not leave the mark too well, and were soon well in the rear. Olenelg led for the first round, where Kohara headed him, but was not allowed to get far away. In fact Glenelg was right on his wheel as they crossed the top for the last time. Kohara was first into the straight, but Glenelg then put in his run and staying on the better of the pair, won by a length and a half. The other pair were then entering the straight about a furlong and a half away and they had a race on their own for third money, Rosie Thorpe getting the verdict by a length and a half.

Tho winner was decorated with the blue riband by Mrs. Schnauer.

Rose Bingen, Kcan .lolin and Normica Heir were next in request. Nor- j mica Heir was in charge going; past the stand from Peterwah, Kean j John and Rose Bingen. Pyramus took command along the back and led into the straight from Normica Heir, Rose Bingen and Kean John. From j this out Pyramus held his own lo win j by a couple of lengths from Rose Bingen, which beat Kean John by a neck with Normica Heir a similar distance away fourth. Peterwah, Peter Swift and Wild Nut were the next to finish. An Outsider Wins. Twenty-six went to the post for ihe St. Heller's Handicap, and Sparkling Pronto was the public's first fancy, with the bracket La Fayette and Cole Drift next in demand, though they carried over £800 less than the favourite. The race resulted in a surprise, for two outsiders filled first and second places. Logan Rothschild was in charge passing the stand from Gold Cost. Golden Hope, Nelson McCormick, and Wakanui. When the back stretch was reached Logan Rothschild was still the pilot, with Gold Cast, Heather Girl, Nelson "McCormaek, Master Councillor, and Wakanui as his.

WHAXGAREI, Saturday. The summer meeting of the Ngunguru Racing Club, which had to be postponed on Boxing Day owing to rain, was held at that place to-day. Early morning conditions were not favourable, in consequence of which, coupled with postponement, public attendance was much restricted, the Whangarei quota being only small this year, which was a pity, as a good class of horse, including some Auckland performers, took part in the racing. The course was only in fair condition, with rouph patches. Fortunately tbe weather remained tine for

the meeting. Results are as follow, no official times being taken :—

AUCKLAND RACING CLUB, j PROGRAMME FOR SECOND DAY. j THE FIELDS REVIEWED. j j The summer meeting of Hie Auckland ! I Racing Club will be continued at Kllerslie to-morrow, and if tbe weather jis favourable there should be a large J attendance and the racing should be , most interesting, for the fields are good j and class is well represented. ! Proceedings will commence with the j Bowen Handicap in which Iwontv-six 'tare engaged. King the Bell ran we'll in i the Queen's Plate on Friday, just being ! beaten by a neck by Degage. Piquant ! won at Feilding recently while she won jtbe Tinakori Handicap, six furlongs, at : Wellington last season. Saiosi is a smart | I colt, while Zannu has shown consistent | ' form recently. Princess Ronnie, wlio has ' | yet to break her maiden status, has been I •galloping well at l-'.llerslie. Merit won a 1 live-furlong race last season and finished ! third on another occasion in her only j three starts. She looks to be in good 'fettle. Cauntlet finished second to Lady I Kewa in the Cordon Handicap at the A.X.C. Spring Meeting and appears to be improving. When the final figures I are adjusted probably Piquant or Merit. I whichever is started of the bracket. King tho Bell and Zanna may be the I public fancies. I The King's Plate, a weight-forage I event over a mile lias attracted a field of j four, and Cold Light will probably carry j most confidence utter her recent peri formances. 'flic other three candidates . will lie sure tv have some friends. 'flic Electric Handicap is composed I mostly of horses that competed in the I Railway Handicap. Koyal Blood is iv at the same weight as be curried mi Friday and is meeting .Master Uuon on 121b. Hipo on 71b ami Puvo on 21b better terms, these being the horses to linish in front of him. Lucius and Dan Quin are down a couple of pounds, while Deluge (which curried lib overweight I and Fool's Paradise are down 31b. Ilka has raced most consistently this season and can run out a smart six furlongs while Dcguge which won the Queen's Plate mi Saturday, is making her first appearance in open company. Probably the public will give most support to Master Doon. Pavo and Koyal Blood. The Ponsonby Hurdle Race has attracted a field'of fourteen, ilia Bella ■tnd (ilenotus, who finished lirst and second respectively in the Crafton lurdlos, did not accept, and Miuingu, ho third horse, is in with the same veight us he had on Friday. The same emark applies to Bullford, which was <oing nicely when he fell. King Abbey nil well lor about a mile and thrcejuarters on the opening day. Santiago s good over hurdles and it will be -ecollected that he linished second to Lochson in the Grand National Hurdle Race. Pine Arch, Miss Melva, Narrow Seek and Rippling are all winners over .he sticks. Pine Arch won this event last year. Probably Santiago, Maunga and Pine Arch may be the best supported on Lhe machine. Tho .Slimmer Cup should prove a good race. Surveyor is not out of it with 0.;! after the way he won the St. Andrew's Handicap at Takapuna on December 1, with lib more. Musketoon was prominent in the tup, while Turleton has \ct to make his appearance at the meeting. He lias raced fairly well in the South. Ruapap.i ib more than useful and ran a great rucc in the Fendalton Handicap at the New Zealand Cup meeting, being close up at the liniSh, while he has several good performances to ins credit over a distance. Bright Day is in good form judging by his display in the Christmas Handicap and his second to Illumination in the Waikato Cup, one mile and a-half, and Matinee in the Hamilton Handicap one mile and a-quarter. Gold Jacket and Loyal Irish may be fancied of those lower down. When the machine closes Ruapapa, Musketoon and Gold .Jacket may perhaps carry most of the investments.

Mandane ran third in the Foal Stakes, while Merry Damon won the Xurscry Handicap and they both appear in the Criterion Handicap. Runnyinede •.*-a_ well up in the l'oal Stakes at the turn when he ran out very -wide and spoiled his chances. Perhaps the public will select them in that order.

Tresillion won nicely at Takapuna, and lie is sure to carry some support in the Waitcmata Handicap. Whetunui run well on Friday, just being beaten by Muscari, while among those lower down Cherry Ripe and Cureaform have shown •rood form recently. Tanadecs, if lv* i. to have any show in the Derby, should also be handy at the finish. .Most patronage will probably be bestowed on Whettiiiiii. Tanadecs and Cureaform.

The Plunket Welter concludes the programme and quite a number of useful horses are engaged. Raceful. who finished third in the Christmas Handicap, Gala Day who was fourth in tiie same event and Barometer may claim most attention when the betting is in progress. The first race will start at 11."10 a.m. and there will be a frequent train and tram service to the course. The programme is as follows:— BOW'E.N" HANDICAP of 400sovs. •Six furlongs.
