A MOTHER'S VOW.
HER LIFE FOR HER SON. THE SOLDIER'S RETURN. TRAGIC STORY OF SPAIN. (By Cnble. —Tress Aesociatlou.—Copj-risht.) (Received 11.30 a.m.) MADRID, December 26. A tragic story of a mother's sacrifice has jusf been revealed here. iSenorn Leonara Gran, deeply affected at her husband's death, besceched the famous Virgin Delcarniel to protect her son fighting in Morocco, and vowed to offer her own life on condition her son was spared. The son returned and was demobilised last Monday. The mother welcomed him with transports of joy. They supped gaily together. The mother put her son to bed as in the days of his childhood, prayed and blessed him, saying: "The Holy Virgin Delcarmel brought you back. Now it is my turn to accomplish the vow made if she spared your life." The son attached no importance to the words, being in complete ignorance of its tragic nature. The mother ppent the night in prayer before the Virgin's image, then drowned herself in the River Terue, where her body was later recovered. — (A. and N.Z.)
