MATCH AGAINST SOUTHLAND. SOUTHERNERS SCORE 215. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") INVERCARGILL, Friday. The cricket match Auckland v. Southland commenced on the Show Grounds at Invercargill at 11.15 to-day in fine, but windy, weather on a well-appointed ground. The wicket and outfield were fair. The teams were:— Auckland: V. C. Butler, TV. J. Coates, I, W. Cooper, <!. L. Goodwin, L. <i. Hemus, E. TV. Hughes, C. R. Jones, W. H. Johnston. A. J. Postles, A. H. Scott, J. B. Simpson. Southland: Dr. R. Brown, H. Forster, F. Goodsir, A. Hamilton, K. Kavanagh, F. Kilby, J. Lynch, S. Lynch, N. Xisbet, A. Poole, A. Walsh. This being the first occasion on which an Auckland cricket team had visited Invercargill considerable interest was taken in the match, especially after Southland's good showing against Otago at Dunedin recently. Pool won the toss from Ilemus, and decided to bat, J. Lynch and Walsh opening to the bowling of Simpson and Coates against a strong wind. The batting was good, as was also tho bowling and fielding At 20 Cooper replaced Coates, who took Simpson's end. The first half hour produced 24 runs. At 30 Herrnis bowled vice Cooper. Fifty appeared at the end of 55 minutes' play, when Goodwin bowled instead of Coates and dismissed J. Lynch. 51—1—34. The latter's innings was sound and chanceless. Cooper bowled again and got Kavanagh leg-before. 57—2—4. Simpson replaced Goodwin, and at the luncheon adjournment the score was two wickets "down for S8 runs. On resumption of play at 2 o'clock Cooper and Coates bowled, and 100 had been scored in 110 minutes. At 106 Cooper eaugnt and bowled Walsh (42). The retiring batsman had played good, defensive cricket. At 110 Hughes caught P. Lynch in the slips brilliantly off Coates' bowling. TVHh fou* -wickets down Goodwin again relieved Coates and bowled Poole. 134—5—10. Coates again bowling soon dismissed Hamilton and Dr. Brown, but Kilby, batting well, made 55, including eight fours, before Scott caught him off Hemus' slows. Goodsir (12) and Forster (8) helped to carry the total to 210, and the inning 3 closed at 3.40 p.m. after WO minutes' batting. Auckland Begins Badly. Afternoon tea was then taken, and Auckland started batting at four o'clock with Postles and Hughes at the wickets, (roodsir bowled Hughes for five and Simpson for seven, two wickets being down for 32. Then Hemus joined Postles, and these two, by good batting, added 103 before Postles wasflbowled by Dr. Brown for 44 four minutes before time.
