NEW COMMONWEALTH SUBMARINES.
Welcome work will be provided for British shipbuilders and marine engineers by the ordering of two new submarines ot largo, cruising radius by the Australian Government" ( S av ß "Army and Navy "Barrow, one of the black spot areas of late as regards unemployment, ought certainly to benefit, for it has turned out more submarines than any other place. At one lime Messrs. Vickers -had a monopoly here of the construction of such craft" but in 1908 Chatham Dockyard began the building of submarines, and in 1914 the firms of Armstrong, Thornvcroft and Scott joined in. There wag a very general extension, of course, during the war, as, in addition to the public dock yards, the firms of Cammell Laird the Fairfield Company. Beardmore and' Co Denny Bros., and Swan Hunter, all built submarines. The two vessels laid down for the British Navy since the peace XI and 01, were both allotted to Chatham Dock3-ard, but all the yards including Rosyth, have been occupied on the completion of vessels transferred from private establishments in 1919-20."
