OBITUARY.

MR. HENRY BEER. The interment took place at the Birkenhead Cemetery to-day of Mr. Henry Beer, of Birkdale, who died on rhris'tmas Day, in his BOth year. He was born at C'alan. Wiltshire, England, and came to New Zealand when nineteen years old. experiencing the vicissitudes common to the pioneers intent on carving liomes and careers for themselves. He worked for some time on the goldtield at Lake Wakatipu. where life in thn s e days was full of exciting incident?. Subsequently, with a large slafT under him, he supplied the firewood fuel for the first Government boats on the lake, in the pre-coal days. Later he established the lime-biirning industry in Southland, with kilns at Browns, near Winton. Removing to Birkdale, where he had resided for upwards of thirty years past, ho successfully engaged in fruitftrowinp; and wine, making. He took np farming land in its native state, and (learci and cultivated this, bringing it into a very productive state. He enjoyed splendid health throughout 3iis life until a week ago. He is survived by hie widow and one eon, Mr. Arthur Henry V.eer, of Birkdale. The eldest son. Ihc late Mr. Frederick Beer, was killed in action in France during th<- Great War.
