ENGLAND'S MEAT SUPPLY.

EXPORT FROM DOMINIONS. LONDON, December 25. Regarding a report from Sydney that the British Government had endorsed a scheme licensing the Dominions to export meat to Britain in quantity sufficient to make up the Home-grown deficiency, it is learned authoritatively that while the Government is sympathetic towards the scheme, a definite decision is unlikely until the matter has been considered by the Food Commission. The Colonial Office emphatically repudiates all anticipatory projects regarding the allocation of the £1.000,000 trade grant. The Government is not committed to any scheme, theoretically or practically. The allocation will be solely dependent on the investigation and report of the Imperial Economic Committee, not a single member of which has yet been appointed. The responsibility for all appointments, apart from the British nominees, devolves upon the Dominions. Meanwhile all statements concerning subsidies, subventions, and preferential licenses relating to meat, fruit, dairy produce, and other products, are declared to be merely the wildest guesswork. The present idea is to devote the £1,000,000 grant principally to the improvement of marketing conditions. The "Shipping World," in an article on preference, says it will be interesting to see if Australia accepts the assistance of the million grant to bring her produce to Britain on similar terms to those which are regarded as so objecimpasition of a dumping duty.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.)
