"It is astounding to find the intelli- ', gence among the majority of the children in the orphan homes in Auckland, in spite of their handicaps," was the remark made to-day by Mr. Mortenscn (secretary of the Retail Grocers' Union) ■ after a tour of the city'B orphanages. , He said he had made inquiries as to what standards the children were in and was surprised to find the large number in the sixth. The instruction was of a very diverse nature and included singing! and elocution in the form of recitations, and dialogues.
