"Never had such a big sale of toys any j previous Christmas." was the answer given by one retailer, this morning. He stated that the Christmas trade was slow at starting, but there had been a big rush the last couple of days, "in fact," he added, "we were quite cleared out,' and had to hunt round for further supplies. The children are, at all events, having a good time, and the sale of coloured balloons for the little ones, hat been simply phenomenal." A record cable speed has been «et by the new Western Union line, which lias been laid between New York and the Azores. Present cables provide a speed of 250 letters a minute, while the new record is 1700 letters a minute. The water is so clear in the fjords of NorwaT that very small object* can be seen clearly at a depth of 150 feet.
