FOURTEEN DAYS' GAOL.
i TWELVE SEAMEN SENTENCED. MASTER'S ORDERS DISOBEYED (Received 1 p.m.) SYDNEY, this day. i Twelve seamen off the Union Company's steamer Kawatiri were charged I at the Police Court, Newcastle, with refusing' to obey the lawful commands of .the master to take the vessel to sea, owing to three additional men signing on at Newcastle under New Zealand instead of Australian articles. Andrew Stewart, master of the Kawatiri, said the ship was ready to put to sea on the night of August 16. Defendants, who were greasers, trimmers and firemen, refused to go below, as thcv contended that the master had refused to replace men who had left with union men who were available. The accused were sentenced to fouri teen days' gaol. J The management states that although the Wakatiri will be prevented from sailing indefinitely, there is little danger jof the trouble spreading to other of the company's steamers.—(A. and N.Z.)
